According to the National Fire Protection Association, the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. The NFPA’s clothes dryer safety tip sheet recommends cleaning lint out of the vent pipe once a year, or more often if your clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. Long vent runs on newer builds. On Calgary dryer calls we regularly find long, complicated vent runs in newer homes. We’ve seen a duct routed up into the attic and an exterior outlet that was still sealed from construction. A long run with several elbows holds more lint and clogs sooner than a short, straight one.
Stacked units in tight closets. Many Calgary laundry rooms are a stacked washer-dryer in a closet. The duct behind them can get crushed or kinked when the pair is pushed back, and it stays out of sight until drying slows down. We separate the units, clean and straighten the duct, and restack them.
Vent cleaning and dryer repair. A dryer that takes two cycles or shuts itself off mid-cycle is very often caused by the vent rather than the dryer itself. Clearing or shortening the run has fixed many of our Calgary calls. If the vent is clear and the dryer still won’t heat, you can book a dryer repair with the same team. A blocked vent makes a dryer run hot, so clean the vent before or along with a heating repair.

Yes, if the duct is long or runs through a wall, ceiling or attic. A store-bought brush reaches the first few feet; a professional cleaning clears the whole run, the bends and the outdoor hood.
You can do the everyday part: clean the lint screen every load and keep snow clear of the outdoor flap. A short, straight duct can be brushed out with a kit. Long runs, stacked units and attic ducts are better left to a technician, since a brush can push a lint plug further in.
Often, yes. Blocked, crushed, capped or very long vent runs are one of the most common reasons we find for slow drying on Calgary calls. Not always: on newer Electrolux dryers damp clothes can be the Eco setting, and a dryer with no heat may need a heater part or a full 240 V supply. If we clean the vent and the dryer still won’t dry, we can diagnose and repair the dryer.
The NFPA recommends at least once a year, and sooner if drying is taking longer than normal. Long vent runs and stacked units in closets usually need it sooner. Book one when you move into a home, too.
